Tips On What To Watch For

According to the Federal Trade Commission, not all contractors operate within the law. Here are some tip-offs to potential rip-offs to watch for. We hate hearing stories from our customers and contacts of how they were taken advantage of or ripped off by contractors in the past. Improve your odds by demanding your painter does none of the following:

  • Wants “deposit” or “materials” money up front (how much are you willing to lose?)
  • Accepts only cash as payment (failure to report income is a federal offense)
  • Operates from a number not listed in your local directory or with 411
  • Does only door to door soliciting
  • Claims membership with the BBB when the company is not listed at www.dallas.bbb.org
  • Claims to be insured, but cannot produce a certificate of insurance on request
  • Offers an unusually long warranty (warranty is only good if the company is around)
  • Pressures you for a quick or immediate decision to receive their discount or best deal
  • Begins work without a written formal contract outlining all items agreed upon
  • Hires day laborers to perform the work or leaves to work else wear in the middle of your job
